Dust Devils MC 2010 Ride Schedule

For club members and their invited guests

Dirt and Dual Sport Rides

March 20: Dust Devils Get Acquainted Day

Joe Waggoner and Dean Chaney will lead two groups of riders (experience and bike type) from Estates Blvd. (Golden Valley) to Moon Rocks for lunch and return. Staging area is about 100 yards before the end of pavement-at the fenced off gas pipe area on the right. Total round trip mileage is around 60 miles. Meet at the staging area by 9:00 AM and leave by 9:30 AM. Email Dean or JW for info.

April 17-18th: Nightingale Mtn Range Challenge and Adventure Ride

Gary Lambert will lead a Challenge Ride (aggressive enduro style riding) on single tracks in the Nightingale Mountain Range just East of Winnemucca Dry Lake. There will be long technical sections on ridges, sand, and cow trails in canyons requiring above average riding skills and decent speed. Will need 115 miles gas range and bring a lunch. Dean Chaney will lead the adventure/scenic ride (about 150 miles) through the Nightingale Range over to Empire and up to Gerlach, and back via Black Rock Playa and two hot springs. If enough riders want to we can have beer and lunch at Frog Hot Springs, instead of heading for Gerlach for Lunch and gas. Can do gas in Gerlach after lunch at hot springs or in Empire (if they have gas) before lunch at the hot springs. Beer can be picked up in Empire before heading for the hot springs and a dip. Gary and I will be camped at a scenic site on the Southwest corner of Winnemucca Lake off of Rte 447. This is about 10 miles North of Nixon, NV. We will be camped there from April 8th through the 11th. We will be riding quads in addition to dual sports. Feel free to join our camp and enjoy some quad riding a couple of Lambert type happy hours. This will be the staging area for both rides also. April 10th rides will depart from the camp ground at 9:30 AM sharp.

May 8th – 9th: Denio, NV Overnighter - Adventure Ride

Dean Chaney will lead a full two day (mostly dirt) adventure ride to Denio, NV. Will depart from Estates Blvd. (Golden Valley staging area) at 8:00 AM and ride via Lemon Valley, Moon Rocks to Sutcliffe at Pyramid Lake. Then to Sand Pass, Sheep Pass, Empire, Gerlach (lunch/gas), Black Rock Playa, Soldier Meadow, Summit Lake and Bog Hot Valley, 1000 Creek Gorge using existing two track trails and National Forest roads to Denio. Café/bar and Motel at Denio. Preferred Return Route (if High Rock Canyon is not too muddy or water crossing too high): Hwy 140 West to Echo Canyon and South on Rte 8a to Massacre Ranch and High Rock Canyon access. After passing through High Rock Canyon to High Rock Lake we will head out to Rte 34 and South to Gerlach. Maybe a ravioli lunch or dinner at Bruno’s Country Club in Gerlach and then home as we see fit. Alternate Return Route: Hwy 140 East/South from Denio to Alta Canyon to Alta Creek Basin, to Onion Valley, Little Onion Reservoir, Knot Creek and Cove Camp. Then to Stanley Camp and out to Summit Lake Indian Reservation and on to Soldier Meadow and then Gerlach. Reliable motorcycle and riders with a moderate level desert riding skills and experience needed. Bikes should have a 130 miles gas range. Can get gas at Gerlach or Empire (?) going and coming. Will need participant info early. Route is tentative due to lingering snow, High Rock Canyon seasonal closure, and distance to cover to and from Denio. I hope to be able to include three scenic and adventurous areas: Black Rock Playa, Thousand Creek Gorge and High Rock Canyon.

May 22-23: Adventure and Challenge Ride Out of Middlegate, NV

Gary Lambert and Dean Chaney will lead two scenic one day rides in the area. Saturday will feature a 60-75 mile loop. Sunday will feature a 75 mile loop to ???? Middlegate is about 120 miles from Reno, NV out Highway 50 from Fallon, NV.

Mike Derby will organize a catered Saturday night steak and chicken BBQ (with fixin’s and pie). Club will pick up the BBQ tab. Reserve BBQ admission with Mike. This is an overnighter, but you can choose to ride one or both days depending on your druthers. Rides each day will start at 9:30. There is dry camping available for RVs right in the parking lot. There are a few "motel" rooms (I use that word loosely!) available as well.

June 12-13: Lovelock, Nevada Overnight Adventure Ride

Dean Chaney will lead an adventure ride to Lovelock, Nevada and back the following day. Ride will consist mostly of unimproved dirt roads and old mining trails, with some sand and pavement thrown in for good measure. This will be a very scenic and interesting ride. The ride will be do-able by KLR size bikes. We will leave from Estates Blvd. Staging area at 8:00 AM, out through Hungry and Palomino valleys to Pyramid Lake over look on Rte 445 and to Sutcliffe for coffee and touch of fuel, if needed. Then onto Sand Pass, Sheep Pass, Empire Farms (San Emidio Desert) and Empire Store. The direction of Saturday’s ride from here to Lovelock depends on whether Empire has gasoline. We will eventually head for Rabbithole Springs, Lava Beds, Poker Brown and Lovelock. Saturday will be approximately 180 miles with gas available in Gerlach or Empire (about 90 miles out). I would like all of us to stay at Sturgeon’s Casino & Motel for convenience sake. They have a satisfactory restaurant and a place to get takeout cold beer across the street. Will return Sunday via Lovelock Cave and/or Seven Troughs Mine, approximately 100 miles, depend on venue visited.

August 14th: Downieville, CA Downhill Challenge Ride

Denis Van Gundy – Information to be included later.

August 21st: Mostly Nevada Road Ride

Mike Derby will lead a mostly Nevada road ride. We will meet at Truckee River Bar and Grill at Lakeside Drive and West Moana Lane at 8:00 am for breakfast. The ride will pass through Virginia City, down 6-Mile Canyon, and on to Linda's Historical Wabuska Bar via Hwy 50 and Hwy 95A. After a brief stop to lose or gain some coffee, we will roll past Yerington on Hwy 339 and through Smith Valley to 395 on 208. 208 flanks the Walker River through a scenic little canyon here. A short shot south into CA and west on Hwy 89 to Markleeville. Markleeville is 140 miles out, and could be a gas stop, refreshments, or a stop for no real reason other than it should be a nice day. North to Woodford’s, then take Hwy 88 to Foothill/Jacks Valley Road, coming out on 395 for a slab back to Reno. We should arrive back in town by 3:00 pm. If it is a hot day, we could amend Jack’s Valley Road in favor of Pioneer Trail past South Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe east shore to the Mt Rose Hwy.

September 11th: Bodie, CA - Ghost Mining Town Docent Tour

This will include a custom docent tour of Bodie. I have heard this docent before and she is incredible. She recently published a book on Bodie. As part of her book research, she hunted down and interviewed a number of old timers that actually lived there. Her knowledge and presentation skills (she is also a Chitaqua performer) are exceptional. We will go where normal tourists are not allowed including the mining and processing equipment. Cost for the docent is $27 each. My vision for this is a day trip. Start at Topaz Lake or maybe Wellington. Ride to Bodie via dirt roads. Maybe a side trip to Mt. Patterson. Arrive Bodie around 11:00 and have a sack lunch. There is no food there. Do the tour about 12:00 for 2 hours. Ride back to origin, load up, go home. There are thoughts about non-riding wives to car/truck pool to Bodie from camping/motel area. It will be a pretty long day. An option for those that want to could be to make it a two day thing and camp at Walker River Resort or Topaz Lake RV Resort or get a room at Topaz Casino. Club members wanting to ride the slab on their street machines can arrange to meet the cross country dirt riders there. Trail snacks and sack lunches will be necessary. The schedule will be revised to address camping, travel routes and times of travel, and such.

November 13th: Pine Nut Mountain Challenge Ride

Allen Alexander will take club members on a challenge ride involving several single track routes in the Pine Nuts that have been mapped for the BLM. Good deep sand riding abilities and endurance required. Meet at Allen’s house at 1378 Porter Drive, Minden, NV, at 9:30 AM and ready to ride at 10:00 AM. Should be back by approx 3:00 PM.
